🌙 What is Muharram?
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Qur’an. It is a month of deep spiritual significance, a time for reflection, remembrance, and renewal of faith.
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve… of which four are sacred.”
— Qur’an 9:36
These sacred months are:
- Dhul-Qa’dah
- Dhul-Hijjah
- Muharram
- Rajab
🕊️ Why is Muharram Special?
1. A Sacred Time in the Islamic Year
Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. It’s a time for:
- Spiritual reflection
- Turning back to Allah
- Setting new intentions
- Engaging in voluntary worship
Muslims are encouraged to perform good deeds, avoid sin, and use this month to draw closer to Allah.
2. Fasting in Muharram: A Sunnah
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The best fast after Ramadan is in the month of Allah, Muharram.”
— Sahih Muslim
While fasting is not obligatory, it is highly recommended—especially on the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura.
3. The Day of Ashura (10th Muharram)
Ashura is one of the most significant days in the Islamic calendar. On this day:
- Prophet Musa (Moses) and Bani Israel were saved from Pharaoh’s tyranny
- It is reported that Prophet Nuh’s Ark came to rest on Mount Judi
- Muslims are encouraged to fast on Ashura as the Prophet ﷺ did
“Fasting on the day of Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year.”
— Sahih Muslim
To distinguish from other traditions, the Prophet ﷺ encouraged fasting an extra day:
- 9th & 10th (Tasua & Ashura) or
- 10th & 11th

🩸 A Brief Reflection on Karbala
The month of Muharram also holds emotional significance due to the Battle of Karbala, which occurred on the 10th of Muharram in 680 CE.
This was the day when Imam Hussain ibn Ali (RA)—the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ—was martyred along with his small group of supporters. They stood against injustice and tyranny, upholding the values of truth, dignity, and sacrifice.
For many Muslims, especially those of the Shia tradition, this is a time of mourning and remembrance. For all Muslims, the story of Karbala is a reminder that standing for what is right, even when alone, is part of our faith.
“Indeed, Allah is with those who are patient.”
— Qur’an 2:153
✨ Final Thoughts
Muharram is a month of peace, patience, and powerful spiritual opportunity. It marks not only the beginning of a new Islamic year, but also a sacred time to reconnect with Allah, increase good deeds, and reflect on the lessons of the past.
